Outerlands - New Kid On The Guac

Imagine: it’s Sunday morning, you lazily awaken at 9 am with faint memories of last night’s midnight pizza order. As you slowly sip your coffee and delete your snapchat story that 36 people have already viewed, your mind wanders to omelets and biscuits and mimosas. Ah, the glorious Holy Day of Brunch in the city. What a feeling!  But then it hits you: you don’t have a brunch spot picked out yet. DON’T PANIC!

Ladies and gents, New Kid has got you covered. Let me save you the cold sweat of frantically reading yelp reviews and tell you now: this place is one of a kind and definitely worthy of a visit. They’re open for weekday breakfast, lunch, and dinner and weekend brunch, but because I’m incredibly biased (and also I eat for free at work during the week) I highly recommend choosing weekend brunch.

The entire vibe is very hipster, with wooden interior, high rise tables, and dim lighting. The wait is outside, so come prepared. We chose a very cold and rainy day to try it out, but thoughts of the dutch pancake danced in my head and kept me going in that trying time.

The menu highlights its culinary ingenuity full of bold flavor profiles but could be a bit overwhelming for people who are not well-versed in the language of ‘foodie’. For example, the menu item ‘eggs-in-jail’ is described as ‘bacon, aioli, charred cabbage, balsamic vinaigrette’. They forgo mentioning that there is an egg cracked into the center of a thick-cut piece of bread below these toppings. However, if you do some digging and are open to new things, you will not be disappointed. That being said, I ordered the eggs-in-jail and it was a little slice of heaven. I always lean toward savory foods for brunch, but my roommate went for the sweet route with the apple dutch pancake and also had a moment of clarity at that very table.

Please, don’t take my word for it. Try it out and see for yourself. After all, brunch is the best meal of the week, and you don’t want to miss out on this trendy spot. Check out the menus, make a reservation, and buy me a gift card. Happy brunching!
